Talking to Yourself How Cognitive Behavior Therapy Can Change Your Life Dr Pamela Butler Reviews

I have read tons of self help books to get rid of my tendency to procrastinate when I feel stressed (I only procrastinate at certain emotional times). All of these books either had some interesting insights or were full of fluff that didn't help, but none of them cleared up my head like this one did.

This book allowed me to get to the ROOT of the problem a negative self-concept fueled by negative self-talk. The exercises taught me to talk to myself in a supportive way--to become the supportive parent to myself that I never had growing up. This supportive self-talk is the foundation upon which all other success techniques can spring from.

The only thing I didn't like about this book was Butler's view on people's capacity to achieve certain goals. She seemed to advocate that people had limits, and sometimes they have to accept that. I partly agree that there are certain limits that you must accept in order to work around them--things like being born into a certain family, money given to you, etc. However, there are still a lot of things within a person's control if they work at it step by step, and accepting your limits too early can put you at a disadvantage if you haven't sufficiently tried to overcome them. Check out studyhacks.com for blog posts on deliberate practice's impact on "talent",etc.

Nevertheless, this book was still a gem for me. Rather than overly positive rah-rah self-talk (that can do more harm than good to some people), Butler teaches you to support yourself through supportive, yet realistic self-talk.

Her techniques are simple and easy to apply, yet they are profoundly effective! I have learned a lot of philosophy as well as read a lot of self-help stuff, but always suffered from over worrying and negative self-talk until I applied what I learned in this book.

The result? Inner peace and clarity that I haven't felt since I was a child. It takes practice to make it work for you, but if you practice what she teaches, you will see the profound effects on your life.
I would expect that somebody who is labeled a DOCTOR on the cover of the book would have a better grasp of the English language. Or at least have a decent editor who corrects mistakes before publishing a book. There were so many comma splices, spelling and syntax errors that I found myself wishing I could correct it and hand it back like a teacher. It was hard to get into the "material" with so many grammatical errors in this book. In addition, other books are better written with more significant details, not to mention correct grammar.
the impact of this book in my life is indescribable. I will surely give it 5\5.
A beautifully written book that speaks to the inner struggle we all have with the different directions we can feel "pushed and pulled" by our inner voice. Understanding and comprehending this material will provide you with the guidance to feeling true contentment in your life. "Acceptance is like penicillin!"
This book expressed so well what I had been thinking to myself ever since I was young. The material is clear and very organized, so it is quite easy to absorb. Merely being aware of what I was telling myself has made a great difference in my life.
It had good information that was well laid out generally. There were at times almost too many client examples of specific points being made, which for me diminished the impact somewhat. Otherwise I would've went for 5 stars. Still, worth the price and expenditure of time.
Dr. Butler offers a way to recognize our patterns of unhealthy self-talk. She tells us that we often use overbearing Judges rather than realistic Guides in our self-talk, and she provides a way to change these Judges into a language of support. I found her insight that we have to develop an awareness of how we are driving, stopping, and confusing ourselves with our self-talk very useful. I certainly could identify with the unrealistic, relentless internal push to "get busy," "do it right," or "be strong."

By becoming familiar with these critical judges, you can catch yourself using these types of internal dialogue and consciously choose a more supportive way of speaking to yourself. I highly recommend this book if you tend to beat yourself up.
